Summer is here!

 

"Now to Him who is able to do far more than all we ask or imagine..." –Ephesians 3:20

This verse came to life in a new way in my life in the last two weeks.

A couple weekends ago, I was hit with the reality of how close the end of the school year and summer were and I felt extremely unready to be leaving Point Loma after my junior year. So through prayer and talking with my mom I decided to see if there was any way that I could stay on campus over summer. I had this strong sense that this wasn't just my own idea but that maybe God was trying to show me something.

So on the Monday before finals week, I spent the afternoon after classes going all over campus to the different departments like OSV (Office of Strength and Vocation), Public Safety, the department of theology and Christian ministry, the library, Student Development, etc. Basically I went EVERYWHERE I could think of. It was insane. None of those places had any jobs left so I started to get really discouraged and wanted to give up. But I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe I was being led by more than my own thoughts. So I thought of the Admissions Office and a friend I have that works in there and went over there to ask. I knew it was quite late to try to get a job for the summer because most departments hired students for summer employment weeks ago. So the fact that I was trying to find one this last minute seemed absurd and I knew it would take a miracle if it was going to happen. But that’s exactly what I was hoping for!

I went in to the Admissions office and asked if there was possibly anything they had available. They told me that they had 3 summer intern positions which were all filled until recently. I later found out that three days before I came in, someone who had the job dropped out, leaving one open spot. However, when I went in on Monday, there was someone else coming in later that day to try to fill that spot but the oh so friendly people in Admissions told me that if the spot was still open by tomorrow, they would let me know.

I left the office and sent a couple emails to other departments and as soon as I closed my laptop, I got a text asking me if I wanted to go lead worship in in late May/early June in HAWAII. WHAT. That was insane. I've never been to Hawaii before, I've never flown overseas before, I don't even like planes, but I get asked to go to Hawaii! I didn't immediately accept that offer though because I had just spent all day asking for things to do on campus and I didn't want to throw away all the work I did and people I contacted. So I decided it would be best to wait to see if I heard back from anyone.

And then, the next day, I get an email from Admissions, saying that they had a tour guide/receptionist position open for the summer! Blew my mind! And then I thought about the fact that I was also asked to lead worship in Hawaii. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do both but I went in to the Admissions Office that day, told them about that opportunity, and they said that it could probably work out to do both. By Thursday, we figured out that I would be able to work on campus, live on campus, AND go to Hawaii to lead worship with PLNU's worship ministries Summer Ministry Team (SMT) program.

Like in that verse in Ephesians at the beginning of this post, God did far more than I asked for and way more than I ever imagined. Before, I wanted maybe to live on campus and work. Now, I get to live on campus, be paid to work in the Admissions office with GREAT people – some of the nicest and most helpful, and fun people I've met – AND go to Hawaii at the end of the month. On top of all that, I still get to go lead worship at a camp in Big Bear too in July! THIS IS SO EXCITING.

I started work this week and it's been absolutely delightful. Getting to work with the Admissions staff and talk to incoming students as well as prospective students is so great. I've talked to some students who are coming here in the fall and it's really exciting to hear their names before seeing them next year. I'm super excited and looking forward to this summer working here, talking to people, going to Hawaii, and enjoying to be on Loma's beautiful campus for 4 extra months :)

Feel free to call the Admissions Office some time and say hello, especially if you'll be coming to Loma in the fall! I'll be working the front desk most of the day :)

p.s. to add on to the greatness of the last couple weeks, yesterday I finally got a car again! So grateful for all that God is doing in my life right now. He's doing so much more than I imagined!

This year for the first time, Point Loma ASB put on a Mardi Gras Masquerade dance on a boat! It was awesome! Here's just a few pictures that I found of the event! I'm not a big picture person so I didn't personally take too many...

Something That Excites Me

First of all,

I apologize for my inconsistency in updating this blog. A couple weeks ago, my computer's hard drive crashed so all the stuff I kept on it for here was gone so I couldn't really post during that time. But I got it repaired and now it's working again (hopefully it stays this way)! Haha I've had a difficult time this year with things breaking! 

As a general update on what's going on: It's the last month of school. All the seniors are talking about graduation and it's really sad. Some of my closest friends are seniors. And it's crazy to imagine that next school year, I'll be in their place as seniors. I don't want to think about it. I'm having too much fun! I have to constantly remind myself to live in this moment all the time and enjoy myself while I'm here. But sometimes it's hard to enjoy myself when the last month of school is when all the projects have to be done, all the papers have to be written, and on top of that having to still be preparing music for chapel services (that's a fun break from school work though)! Needless to say, there are a lot of things I have to do in the upcoming weeks, but I'm excited that I have the opportunity for them.

This year has been wonderful. I don't want it to end. I love Point Loma.

Now, on to what excites me. SO MANY PREVIEW STUDENTS. Over the last few weeks, there have been so many preview students on campus visiting for the first time. It's exciting because I know that some of them are going to be my schoolmates next year! Yay new friends! I've met a couple of them the last couple weeks and I'm looking forward to meeting more. 

Funny story, I'll actually be living in a freshman dorm again next year so I'll get to live with some of the students, maybe even some of you who are reading this! I'll be living in Klassen Hall with an RA. That's weird in itself because all the freshman dorms are going to have both guys and girls in them (obviously still separated into different halls) so it's weird to think of there being Klassen boys, and Nease boys. But I'm sure it will be fun!

Planking

Towards the end of the semester, a couple of my friends and I decided to bring planking back. Rather than give an elaborate story of how it came to be, I'll just share some of the great planks that have occurred in the last few weeks around campus and nearby. Enjoy!

Homecoming

The title of this post is a twofold title. On one hand, this last weekend at Point Loma, it was Homecoming weekend! On the other hand, this is my homecoming back to this blog which I have been so terrible at keeping updated. It's been more than a month since I've written about it anything. But hopefully this homecoming won't just be a one weekend event like Point Loma's was!

Anyway, let's talk about Homecoming! Homecoming at Point Loma is super exciting because it's really an all week long affair that culminates in the Homecoming basketball games that bring out the most school spirit in students and alumni that you'll see all year. Here's some pictures that give a glimpse of what the spirit is like. There's so many more that you can find on Point Loma's Flickr page where you can see what kind of stuff goes on around campus. Check that out too! Without further ado:

 A big majority of the "Green Sea," which is basically the school spirit section in the gym. As you can see, everyone is decked out in green and yellow shirts, morph suits, hats, wigs, face paint, pom poms, etc. to support the Sea Lions! It's quite fun to get spirited up.

An up close shot of the center section of the Green Sea! The few guys you see in the front are what we call Green Sea Hooligans. They get their own shirts and their role basically is to be the most spirited of the fans and get everyone to get loud and energetic. It's like they're cheerleaders, but from the stands. We were cheering really hard obviously for the game. Or maybe just for the picture. I'm not sure.

I'm messing with Roary, the mascot here. No, he is not an actual sea lion. Our mascot is a lion with seaweed for his mane. That makes sense, right?

I really like this picture. It's a shot someone got of me and my friend Jordan just walking around like the buds we are. It gives the warm tinglies to see this picture! It's my profile picture on my Facebook now because I liked it so much! I put a link to my FB not to become more popular or anything but to provide a way for whatever readers I have to interact with me in a more efficient manner than blog comments, which don't really happen too much ha. But I got a message today from someone who reads my blog and it was one of the highlights of my day, so if you see this, thanks Jessie! :) And to anyone else, I'd love to hear from you and answer any questions you have about Point Loma life!

This last one was from half time where we had a basketball competition among the students. I participated (obviously) and got second place, losing to a girl. But in my defense she was really good. Even if I didn't throw the game, she would've come close to beating me anyway ;)

Fall Fun!

There are a ton of fun things that happen around Point Loma's campus during the semester but one of my favorite events so far this year has to be this thing that we did for the first time this year called the Klendricks Fallalapalooza. The Klendricks, although it sounds like it could some sort of disease, is really just a blend between the names of the underclassmen dorms. Hendricks is the dorm where I live even though I'm not an underclassman anymore. This year the dorm is 2/3 boys and 1/3 girls because of the crazy amount of girls that applied this year. The other dorm is Klassen, that's an all girls dorm. Klassen + Hendricks = Klendricks. Get it? Anyway. The event was really fun. The theme was like a hodown sort of thing I guess? People wore flannel, there was hay involved and it was a blast! Dorm life is great! Here are some of my favorite pictures from that night that I was in with some of my little freshman and some of my sophomore friends that I met last year :) Haha I was among one of the only juniors there. I feel so old!

The New Year is Fully Underway

The school year started exactly one month ago today. A lot has happened in that time but I'll highlight a few things that I took pictures of yay!

This is the view from my room this year. It's an okay view I guess.

This was my fun outfit for helping out at New Student Orientation. Drenched from head to toe in Point Loma green and yellow. It was seriously so much fun and I'm so glad I helped out. I met a bunch of new people who I forgot almost immediately but now after a month of getting familiar with faces, some of the new students I met those two days of NSO are some great friends of mine!

This is one of the opening ceremonies at NSO where pretty much all the new freshmen and transfer students were. It was crazy to watch so many people start off a new part of their journey.

Okay this, this is huge. This is a picture of Point Loma's president, Robert Brower (otherwise known as Bobby B) ordering a drink from our on campus coffee shop called Bobby B's. I've not seen this before but I had to get a picture to document history.

These four are pictures from an event we had here called Glow with the Flow. It was Point Loma's first official dance and it was SO MUCH FUN. We all, as you can sort of tell, dressed in crazy colors and went onto a baseball field full of glow sticks, glow in the dark paint, and loud music. I went crazy and had a blast out there.

 These two are from what was called Loma Thrill Night, as well as Naz Night, as well as Christian Family Night. It had a lot of names and no one from our school really knew what to call it. We just called it, let's go to Six Flags. And it was also a blast.

Not having a roommate again this year gave me some freedom to move my beds around. We experimented with a few arrangements of the bunk beds and I found that this was the most comfortable.

This, my friends, is one of the things I've been most excited about sharing with you all this year. I took this right before I led worship at my first chapel of this year. It was INCREDIBLE. I was so excited and antsy to get up there and it was so great to be able to lead my peers in worship of the Father by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in the name of the the Son. I wish I could describe to you how great it felt to get back up there and worship the Lord here at PLNU, but sometimes words on a blog post can't do justice to an experience with the living God.

And last for this post, but certainly not least, is a picture I took right before we went out just two days ago on Wednesday night to lead worship at our weekly Time Out service. I've talked about it on here before but Time Out is definitely one of my favorite worship services we have here at Point Loma. At 9:30PM on Wednesday nights, it's smack-dab in the middle of the week and it's a great time to have a break from homework and life's business to come encounter God through musical worship. I'm so grateful for how the Lord moved this night. And once again, I wish I could describe it better than I am, but it's hard to dictate the hunger that was in the room that night. We played the song We Are Hungry and it really became a theme for the whole night. This campus has those people on it who are hungry for more of the Lord's presence and thirsty for more of His goodness. And the great thing about that is that Jesus talked about that in the Sermon on the Mount. He said, "blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied." (Matthew 5:6) God will meet our hunger and continue to do new things here at Point Loma this year. And I'm excited to watch and to be an active participant to what the Holy Spirit wants to here.
